Messi shines for Barca

13:10 – 23rd, Sep 2007 Barcelona had Argentinian wonderkid Lionel Messi to thank for their 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Camp Nou.

Messi was on target after 74 and 80 minutes for the Catalans, before Freddie Kanoute netted a last-gasp consolation for the UEFA Cup holders.

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard said after the win: “I am always very happy when we achieve what we set out to do.

“This was a key game for us, to continue with our work and to give confidence to everyone.

“I congratulate the team because they have claimed a very important victory for us. Everyone who has seen the game will have to say that we deserved the win.” In the other game of the day, Recreativo Huelva won 2-1 against Espanyol in the Nuevo Colombino, with Javi Guerrero netting both goals for the home side after Albert Riera had given the visitors an early lead.
